Spearguns

Spearguns are probably the first piece of spearfishing gear that comes to mind when gearing up for freedive spearfishing. There is really no such thing as a one size or style fits all when it comes to spearguns, so selecting the correct speargun is going to take into account a number of factors. Most spear fisherman would consider the main factor as intended use. Do you need a speargun for short shots in low visibility or a blue water speargun to shoot longer distances in clear open water? Spearguns are available in large variety of lengths and each has it’s designed use in each set of conditions. Shorter length spearguns up to 85 cm provide the diver with increased ease of maneuverability in bad visibility and low light conditions where they are designed for accuracy at short distances. Spearguns in 85 cm to 125 cm lengths are common for hunting what may be considered good conditions where visibility from 8 -15 ft allows for shooting fish at a couple of gun lengths. When it comes to hunting fast fish such as large pelagic species at farther distances in clearer water, a speargun with long range and quickness is needed. To accomplish this, blue water spearguns are made in long lengths usually 120 cm and longer to allow for a longer band pull and often utilize multiple bands to power lengthy shots. What is gained in reach and accuracy is often a trade off in maneuverability due to their long length, so give much consideration to the conditions the speargun you want to purchase will be used for. Alternately, a shorter length speargun is going to be easier to maneuver and aim but will lack the power for long range shot placement.
